Another Voice.

Dear  President Obama

I would like to bring to your attention a very important issue.  I am a concerned citizen who believes that it is the duty of the United States to help Darfur.  I know that we are going through an economic crisis, but people are people and in Darfur people are being killed, raped and tortured.

At my school, Daoud Hari, the author of The Translator, came and did a presentation.  He is a Darfur survivor who is a firsthand witness to the horrors that are going on there.   When asked what he would say to people who said that America should worry about itself first, he reminded us that Americans have a lot.  And he is right.  Most of us have food or a way of getting food.   Most of us have some sort of shelter.  And most importantly, we have a government who cares about us and who will stick up for us.  What I ask is that the government of the United States do what it would do for us, for the people of Darfur, because they do not have a government that will stick up for them.

In order to save Darfur I request that you make it a priority to achieve
a    Protection of civilians from violence, starvation and disease
a    Sustainable peace for all Sudan
a    Justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators

You are a leader and people listen to you.  If you make this a priority, and let America know that this is a priority, people will listen to you.
Thank you very much,
